Facts About Reading Aloud  by U.S. Department of Education  www.reading rockets.org

Children who are read to will be more prepared for school.  If the mother has more education then the child is more likely read to everyday.  The lower the mother’s education the least likely the child is read to every day.  White children are read to outloud more than blacks or hispanics.  Children in homes below the poverty line are less likely to be read to everyday.  How does correspond with a child’s success in school, you may ask?  To have a higer success in school children need to be read to outloud everyday.  Many children who aren’t read to everyday are already behind by the time they start school.  They play catch up and usually lag far behind the children who have been read to outloud everyday.

I plan on using the information within this article to help those children who come into my kindergarten classroom become more successful by reading as much as I can to them.

The Importance of the Classroom Library   Written by Susan B. Beuman

To have a more effective library you should have at least 300 titles in the classroom but you need to supplement from the media center.  Librarires need to have a wide variety of books that span ranges of difficulty, language, topics and genres.  Independent reading time for reluctant readers may be more likely to select a book if teachers highlight particular books during read alouds.  To foster love of books, children need opportunities to talk about them.

Children learn to ready by reading.

I have learned so much again today.  I am going to  set up my classroom library with my children during the first weeks of school.  I am kind of nervous about it but it is worth trying.

Today has been absolutely wonderful.  So many ideas were shared.  One of my favorite activities today was the dream flag.  I look forward to tomorrow when we discuss classroom libraries.
